Modern küresel ekonomik sistemin geliþmeye baþladıðı 17. yüzyılda Doðu Akdeniz'de sosyo-ekonomik yaþamın kurumsal temelleri nelerdi? Bölge ekonomisinin geleneksel kurumları deðiþmekte miydi? 2003'te baþlayan ve bu soruların yönlendirdiði bir veri derleme projesi, saðlıklı yanıtlar geliþtirmeye yardımcı olacak özgün kaynaklar içeren bu çalıþmayla sonuçlandı. On ciltlik bu yapıt, Osmanlı İmparatorluðu'nun baþkenti ve Doðu Akdeniz'in ticari merkezi olan İstanbul'un o döneme ait 15 þer‘i mahkeme defterindeki binlerce hükmün günümüz yazısına aktarılması, Türkçe ile İngilizce özetlerinin hazırlanması ve yedi ana baþlıkta tasnif edilmesiyle ortaya çıktı.

In the seventeenth century, when the modern global economy began to take shape, what institutions governed socio-economic life in the Eastern Mediterranean? Were the region's traditional economic institutions in flux? This ten-volume set, the culmination of a data-gathering project started in 2003, presents original historical sources that can help to generate sound answers. The set contains transliterations, along with Turkish and English summaries, of thousands of cases found in 15 seventeenth-century Islamic court registers from Istanbul, then the capital of the Ottoman Empire and the commercial center of the Eastern Mediterranean. The cases are grouped under seven topical headings.
