Poe, who was one of Americas most original writers
and viewed as a crucial contributor to the American
Renaissance, cared less for his short stories than
his poems, and indeed considered himself primarily
poet. However, it has been his tales that brought him
worldwide fame. In his short stories, Poe deals chiefly
with mystery, horror and crime. He is also considered
the inventor of the detective-fiction genre.
