In Le Père Goriot (Father Goriot, 1834-35), which is
widely considered his most important novel, Balzac told
the tragic story of an old man whose selfless love for his
unappreciative daughters was rewarded by humiliation
and disrespect. The novel was also a realist description
and critique of the social conflicts and stratifications in
the French society.
